Loans 2 Go Top Tips: Upcycle to save money!

At Loans 2 Go we have a passion for helping people to get their finances sorted out. That’s why we offer products such as online loans which are clear to understand and easy to apply for.

We are also always on the lookout for ways to help people save money. One way you can do this is by upcycling.

So what is upcycling?  Upcycling is also often called creative reuse. It looks upon waste as a resource. Upcycling is taking something that would normally be considered waste and repurposing it. Interestingly, the upcycled item often becomes more useful – and more beautiful – than it originally was.

So upcycling makes more of an everyday product than its original purpose, and often increases its value too. It also helps the environment as it reduces landfill.

So what kind of items can you upcycle and how do you get started?

There are two ways that you can approach upcycling. The first is to think of an item that you need, and see if it can be made through upcycling. The second is to think of a surplus item that you already have, and plan something creative that you could do with it.

Some common everyday items that are used in upcycling are:

  • Plastic eg cartons such as milk cartons, food lids
  • Rubber eg old tyres, tennis balls
  • Wood eg driftwood, furniture, picture frames
  • Glass eg jars, bottles

What kind of things can you make with these upcycled items? The list is endless! Here are our Top Ten Ideas:

  1. Use cutaway plastic milk cartons for storing stationery items
  2. Cut a slit in a tennis ball and use it to hold keys or pens
  3. Upcycle old picture frames into organisers for stationery items or jewellery
  4. Use glass jars for storing sewing items or homemade toiletries
  5. Use cutaway plastic milk cartons for spreading compost or planting seeds
  6. Paint an old rubber tyre and use it as an attractive surround for garden planting
  7. Strap a small flashlight to a plastic milk carton filled with water for an ambient night light
  8. Use glass jars or old crockery for displaying flowers
  9. Use old picture frames as trays
  10. Wooden pallets can be used to make large items such as a coffee table, or smaller items such as wine racks and spice racks.

These are just a few ideas to get you started, but the possibilities for upcycling are endless.

So if you are currently trying to sort out your finances then why not make upcycling part of that process? It can become a way of life and save you a lot of money.
