Christmas party season is upon us and so many of them are just the same. Standing round someone’s kitchen, drink in one hand, food in another, trying to make some kind of conversation with the complete stranger opposite you – whilst at the same time making sure you don’t embarrass yourself by spilling your drink or food all over the place.
Sometimes don’t you wish for something a bit different? A bit more exciting?
Contrast this with a children’s party where there is so much organised activity that the time just flies past. As well as the food and drink there can be music, games, prizes, and maybe even cartoons or an entertainer. Not forgetting Santa of course! Why can’t adult Christmas parties be as much fun as children’s?
Oh yes they can! If you are organising a party this Christmas why not include some party games? Whilst some people might initially moan and complain, most of us love them really. They give structure and focus to your party and are a real ice breaker. Much better than those stilted kitchen conversations!
Once you start researching party games there are so many to choose from that you will have no trouble at all filling your evening. But to help you we’ve picked out our Top Five Christmas party games that we think you and your guests will enjoy. Here we go ……
Everyone loves a Christmas movie – and we all know those self-proclaimed experts who insist they know everything about them! Well here’s time to find out. You can download a printable Christmas movie trivia question sheet here, either to copy for your guests or read out if you prefer. The answers are at the end. If you prefer a more interactive movie-related game then there are ideas here for a Christmas movie drinking game where you watch the movie and drink when certain things happen during it.
This is a popular game at any time of the year but give it a festive twist by having the theme of the worst Christmas presents you have ever received (though best be careful if some of the givers are in the room!).
If your party includes a Secret Santa then why not liven it up with this festive gift exchange game? Otherwise you could just wrap up small gifts such as sweets or baubles. The game involves reading a story here. Every time the word RIGHT is read, everybody passes the gift they are holding to their right. Every time the word LEFT is read, everybody passes the gift they are holding to their left. When the word ACROSS is read, the gift is passed to the person opposite. The gift each person is holding when the story ends is the gift that they keep.
This is a fun game to surprise your guests. Either write or stick a label referring to one of the 12 days of Christmas on the bottom of every food plate before guests arrive. Then just as people finish eating , announce that you’ll be having a “12 Days of Christmas” sing-along after dinner and they need to check underneath their plate to learn what part they need to sing. When singing the song, each guest stands up to sing the line printed on their plate then has to sit down for the rest of the song, until it is their turn again Things can get very confusing, especially with a larger group, but it’s great fun for everyone.
This one is great at breaking the ice and getting your guests to know each other. Simply give each person a ticklist of Christmas-related activities: you can download an example here. Then people need to go round the room and find others who have done that activity, who then sign their sheet. A prize is given to the first person to get all their sheet signed.
We hope that these games will help you to get your party started and really enjoy some festive fun with your family and friends. You can use them to put on a great Christmas party without overspending!
