We have recently looked at how to plan a wedding without spending a fortune. If you are planning a wedding and missed any of our articles why not check them out:
So now we come to the next stage of the proceedings – the honeymoon. This is the opportunity for the two of you to spend some much-needed time alone together after the months of wedding planning and the excitement of the day itself. The problem is that a honeymoon places yet more demands on your already overstretched finances.
Is it possible to have a wonderful honeymoon without spending too much money? Let’s look at some ideas:
Save it for later
One of the main things to decide is whether to have a honeymoon straight away or save it for later – as Harry and Meghan did. Yes you do need some time together but there is a growing trend to enjoy a couple of days away after the wedding then have your honeymoon a little later.
There are many advantages to this approach. Hopefully you won’t be as exhausted by then as you might be just after the wedding. It could also be easier to organise because you’ll have time to sort out all the post-wedding chaos and settle into married life before having to think about packing that suitcase. Also, depending on the time of year you get married, you might be able to get a much better honeymoon deal by going slightly later.
So having a deferred honeymoon is definitely worth thinking about.
All inclusive
If you dream of a sunny beach honeymoon then one of the best ways to do this is to find an all-inclusive hotel. These can be incredible value for money as all your food and drink is included. This means that everything is paid for up front and you don’t need to spend any more money once you are there.
You are likely to be able to get an even greater deal if you can travel out of peak holiday season (though do always check the weather patterns for where you are going to make sure it is a good time to visit the place of your choice).
All inclusive hotels may well throw in some extra treats for you if you let them know it is your honeymoon. It will certainly be a trip to remember. Popular all inclusive destinations include Mexico, Dominican Republic, Cape Verde, Spain, Greece and Turkey. Websites such as TravelZoo can help you to find good deals on the holiday of your dreams.
European break
If you would prefer either a city break or to stay in a smaller place then take a look at some of the delights that Europe has to offer. Within a few hours you could be enjoying a stroll round Paris, Rome or Barcelona, unpacking that suitcase in front of a spectacular Austrian mountain, Italian lake, Greek beach or small French resort. Europe has endless possibilities for a dream holiday of whatever interests you.
So have a good think about what you want. Just to get you started, here are the Top Ten cheapest destinations in Europe for a short break, according to recent research by The Post Office:
Once you have an idea of where you might like to go, search online for the best deal. Websites such as Travel Supermarket are a good place to start. It is also worth dropping in to your local travel agent as they may well be able to put something together for you at a good price.
Staycation
Don’t rule out having a honeymoon in this country. Depending on the time of year you may not get blazing sunshine but you should be able to find pretty much anything else that interests you. Whether in the heart of the city or the depth of the country, there is something to suit all tastes: and no endless waiting around airports either!
For a touch of luxury, take a look at some of the UK’s country house hotels. Off-season and midweek bookings can be much cheaper than the full rate. Or you may prefer to investigate something a bit different such as a tree house or log cabin. Some log cabin holidays can also be combined with specific areas of interest for an extra touch to your honeymoon. Or for animal lovers why not plan a night at a zoo as part of your honeymoon?
These are just a few ideas but hopefully have given you the inspiration to realise that something special that you would love for your honeymoon might be right on your own doorstep!
